Applying for OHIP

A refugee whose claim has been accepted can:

  • Apply for permanent resident status
  • Begin the process to bring immediate family members to Canada
  • Apply for a health card under the Ontario Health Insurance Program (OHIP).

It is important to apply for OHIP coverage right away because Interim Federal Health Program coverage ends when a refugee becomes eligible for OHIP.  Refugees must apply in person. Learn more about applying here.
