Restrictions on right to a work permit

A refugee claimant from a designated country of origin is not entitled to a work permit until their claim has been accepted by the Immigration and Refugee Board.

However, if 180 days pass from the date they were deemed eligible to have a refugee protection hearing, and the Board has still not made a decision, they can apply for a work permit.
