What is the role of a designated representative?

If a person is under the age of 18, or if they ‘do not appreciate the nature of the proceedings’ to decide their refugee claim or immigration status, they have the right to the help of a designated representative.

The designated representative's role is to help the person understand the process and make decisions in their best interests. For example, the designated representative should help them get and work with a lawyer.
