Can a refugee’s status be taken away?

Yes, in some cases. The Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship can apply to the Immigration and Refugee Board for an order that takes away someone's status as a Convention refugee or person in need of protection. The Minister can apply for either:

  • a ‘cessation’ order or
  • a ‘vacation’ order.
