Applying for permanent residence

A refugee whose claim has been accepted can:

  • Apply for permanent resident status
  • Begin the process to bring immediate family members to Canada
  • Apply for a health card under the Ontario Health Insurance Program (OHIP).

There are several forms to complete. Applicants must take care that no information is missing, incorrect, or inconsistent with information previously given to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) or to the Immigration and Refugee Board. If this happens, it could lead to loss of status and removal from Canada. If an applicant has questions about this, they should get legal advice before completing the forms.
